More than 200 known diseases are transmitted through food; the symptoms of food borne illnesses range from mild gastroenteritis to life threatening neurologic hepatic and renal syndromes.
Food handlers play an important role in transmitting food-borne diseases. Presentation can be either as a silent carrier or as a patient in an acute illness. The following diseases can be transmitted from food handlers to others using food as vector for transmission:
- Amoebiasis
- Giardiasis
- Salmonellosis
- Shigellosis
- Typhoid fever
